WNV Equine Case Reported in Kentucky

Sep 18, 2014

Kentucky’s first West Nile equine case has been reported by the State Veterinarian. The equine affected was a pleasure horse in Calloway County, southwestern Kentucky, and had no previous WNV vaccination history.

“The diagnosis, based on detection of WNv IgM by ELISA and with compatible clinical symptoms demonstrated, does serve as a reminder that West Nile virus circulates in this region and that precautionary measures to minimize exposure to the virus should be taken. Additionally, horsemen may consider consulting their private veterinarians to determine if there is need to stimulate immunity in their horses to achieve desired protection.”
